Newark, N.J. — The John Jay baseball team was defeated 12-1 at Rutgers-Newark University on Tuesday in a rain shortened contest that was called after the top of the seventh inning.
The Bloodhounds were limited to two hits in the affair and were left without a hit until the top of the fourth on a leadoff double by
Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY, Manhattan Center)(1-for-3) who later scored John Jay's only run on a sacrifice fly by starting pitcher,
Johan Abad (Corona, NY, Flushing), who recorded John Jay's other hit, a single to left in the seventh.
After a scoreless first two innings, the host Scarlet-Raiders got two runs across in the bottom of the third to go up 2-0.
After John Jay cut the lead in half, Rutgers-Newark scored three more in the fourth to lead 5-1. They then scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up 12-1.
Abad suffered the loss after going 5.0 innings and allowing nine runs (eight earned) on 10 hits with three strikeouts.
John Jay is back in action on Wed. Apr. 15 for a home contest against Ramapo College, 3:30 p.m. at American Legion Field.
