Baseball Falls at Home to St. Joseph’s-Patchogue

Brooklyn, N.Y. — The John Jay baseball team was defeated at home Thursday as they fell to St. Joseph's-Patchogue 16-8 at Legion Field.

The Bloodhounds, who were doubled in runs, were also doubled in hits as the visiting Golden Eagles outhit John Jay 20-10.

A pair of John Jay players, including Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY, Murry Bergtraum)and Jason Witten (Staten Island, NY, New Dorp), recorded a multiple hit game as Hernandez was 3-for-6 with a double and two runs, while Witten was 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI. John Massoni (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Boys) also had three RBI and was 1-for-3.

The game was scoreless for the first two innings before St. Joseph's-Patchogue got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the third to take a 2-0 lead off of Massoni, who started and went 5.0 innings and allowed five runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. The Golden Eagles then scored at least one run in every inning after that en route to a 16 run afternoon.

The lead changed hands twice. St. Joseph's-Patchogue led 5-2 after four and a half innings. But John Jay countered with a four run inning in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-5 lead.

But St. Joseph's-Patchogue countered with three runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead for good. They then scored four in the seventh, one in the eighth and three in the ninth for a total of 16.

The Golden Eagles' 16 run, 20 hit afternoon was highlighted by their leading hitter Jon Welsh as he went 5-for-6 with five runs and five runs batted in. He recorded two doubles as well as a grand slam homerun in the seventh to break the game open. Teammate Jeff Coyle went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.

James Podlucky suffered the loss in relief after going 3.0 innings and allowing eight runs (five earned) on nine hits.
