Game 2

Wayne, N.J. – The John Jay softball team got what is arguably their toughest opponent for the 2009 season out of the way on Thursday as the Bloodhounds were swept in a doubleheader at William Paterson University. They lost the first game 16-1 before fighting tooth and nail in a 3-0 loss in the second game.

John Jay registered two hits on the afternoon combined (one in each game). The Bloodhounds lone hit in the first game was a two out single to center in the fourth inning by Kim Bifulco (Staten Island, NY, St. John Villa), while game two's hit was a one out singe to center in the fifth by Sarah Balgobin (South Ozone Park, NY, John Adams).

In the first game, the host Pioneers scored four runs in the first and six in the second to take a 10-0 lead after two.

John Jay''s lone run of the afternoon was an unearned score in the fourth when leadoff hitter, Nelly Vega (Bronx, NY, In-Tech Academy)scored on a wild pitch with one out.

The host Pioneers then scored six runs in the fourth inning for a 16-1 lead en route to the win.

In the second game, William Paterson scored a run in the first and two in the third for a 3-0 lead. But the John Jay fielding denied the Pioneers any further damage as the Bloodhounds were in the contest every step of the way.

Balgobin's single to break up game two's no hitter set a potential tying run to the on deck circle. The Bloodhounds then had a one out walk, by Vega, in the sixth to give John Jay another chance. Balgobin walked again in the seventh, with two outs, but the Bloodhounds failed to cash in en route to the 3-0 decision.

Nina Chao (Woodside, NY, W.C. Bryant) went 6.0 innings in the second game and allowed three runs on seven hits.

John Jay is back in action tomorrow for a noon start against Polytechnic University at Floyd Bennett Field.
