Brooklyn, N.Y. — The John Jay baseball team used a five run second inning to establish a comfortable lead early in the contest before moving on to victory as the Bloodhounds defeated Polytechnic University 9-4 at Legion Field on Thursday afternoon.
In a fastly played game which lasted just 2:04, the Bloodhounds established the lead in the first inning and led from start to finish.
Jason Witten, who went 3-for-5 with three RBI, grounded out to first base in the first inning to drive in
Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY, Murry Bergtraum) to give the Bloodhounds a 1-0 lead.
The second inning saw John Jay pick up five runs on just one hit by registering three walks, one batter hit by a pitch and one player striking out but advancing to first on a wild pitch. And after two innings the Bloodhounds had six runs on three hits and were ahead 6-0.
James Podlucky (Staten Island, NY, IMG Academy) had a big afternoon going 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI, two runs and a walk, while
Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY, Manhattan Center) was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI.
Hernandez scored three time for John Jay while going 1-for-3 with two walks.
Johan Abad (Corona, NY, Flushing) picked up the win after going four innings and allowing no runs on four hits while striking out three.
Ludwing Francisco (Santo Domingo, DR, Gregorio Luperon) went three innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits with three strikeouts.
Justin Powers (Astoria, NY, Long Island City) wrapped up the final two innings allowing a run on two hits and fanned two batters.
Jeffrey Burdier was 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs for Polytechnic.
David Li pitched eight full innings and allowed nine runs (eight earned) and struck out three.
John Jay returns to action on Sat. Apr. 4 at Lehman for a conference doubleheader starting at noon.
