Softball Sweeps Lehman in Conference Doubleheader

Brooklyn, N.Y. – The John Jay softball team won a pair of games on Thursday in a conference doubleheader against Lehman College. The Bloodhounds won the first game 17-2 before winning the second game 12-4 (both via five inning mercy rule) at Floyd Bennett Field.

With the wins John Jay is now 12-17 (6-4 CUNYAC), while Lehman is 4-22 (2-9 CUNYAC).

In the opener, John Jay scored nine runs in the bottom of the first and six in the bottom of the second to take a 15-0 lead after two innings.

The Bloodhounds were never threatened in the contest and pounded out 18 hits in the win. Nelly Vega (Bronx, NY, In-Tech Academy) was 4-for-5 with four runs and two RBI. Fellow teammates, Arlene Pena (Bronx, NY, Lehman)and Olivia Marquez (Paso Robles, CA, Templeton) had three hits a piece in the victory. Pena was 3-for-3 with a double, three runs and two RBI, while Marquez was 3-for-3 with a run and a pair of RBI.

Angela Lam (Brooklyn, NY, Newtown) picked up the win in the circle after allowing two runs on four hits while striking out six.

In the second game, Lehman scored three runs in the top of the first to grab a 3-0 advantage. But once John Jay came to bat in the bottom half, they quickly claimed the lead.

The Bloodhounds scored eight runs in the first and three in the second to lead 11-4 after two frames. John Jay scored enough runs to win via the mercy rule with a run in the bottom of the fourth to go up by eight.

Vega once again was a spark going 3-for-3 with a double, two runs and three RBI. Pena was 2-for-2 with a run and four RBI.

Nina Chao (Woodside, NY, W.C. Bryant) picked up the win in game two after allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits.

John Jay returns to action on Fri. Apr. 24 at York for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
