Jamaica, N.Y.— The John Jay softball team wrapped up its 2009 conference schedule with a pair of wins as the Bloodhounds swept York College in a doubleheader on Friday. The Bloodhounds won the first game 10-0 before winning the second game 15-0 at Haggerty Field on Friday.
John Jay is now 14-17 this season and finished 8-4 in conference play this season.
In today's opening game, John Jay scored three runs in the top of the second inning to take a 3-0 advantage. They put up four more in the third to lead 7-0, then platted three more in the fifth t go up by 10 and win the opener via the five inning mercy rule.
Meanwhile, starting pitcher
Angela Lam (Brooklyn, NY, Newtown) allowed no runs on one hit and struck out six batters in the win.
John Jay hammered out 12 hits in the win with all nine starters recording at least one hit. Freshman designated player,
Kim Bifulco was 3-for-3 with a run, while
Danielle Bonici (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Girls) was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Nelly Vega (Bronx, NY, In-Tech Academy) was the lone player in the game to recorded an extra base hit and laced a triple down the right field line in the second inning to drive in two runs as she finished the game with three RBI.
Sarah Balgobin (South Ozone Park, NY, John Adams) scored three times and had a pair of RBI.
In the second game, John Jay drew 14 walks and eight of the nine players had at least one RBI.
John Jay scored seven runs in the top of the first to take a 7-0 lead and the lead was never in doubt in the nightcap.
The Bloodhounds scored another run in the second and seven in the third to take a 14-0 lead after three as they cruised in game two.
Christina Perez (Brooklyn, NY, James Madison) went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI in the second game. She, along with
Marlenne Nunez (Bronx, NY, Bronx Leadership Academy), Bifulco, Lam and Balgobin had two RBI each in the victory.
Nina Chao went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI at the plate. In the pitching circle, she allowed no runs on two hits and struck out three in the win.
John Jay wraps up the 2009 regular season with a doubleheader on Saturday at the College of Mount Saint Mary at 1 p.m.
