Brooklyn, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team closed out the 2009 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) season with a pair of wins on Saturday afternoon as the Bloodhounds swept a doubleheader against the City College of New York (CCNY) 5-0 and 13-3. With the win the Bloodhounds finish the conference season with an 8-2 record and will be the second seed in the conference playoffs and will face the College of Staten Island in the opening round in a rematch of last season's championship.
In today's games, the Bloodhounds got a three hit shutout from ace pitcher
Michael Colletta (Staten Island, NY, New Dorp), his first of the season and third of his career. He went the distance and allowed one walk and struck out three.
Meanwhile the Bloodhound offense gave Colletta the lead early. John Jay got three runs across in the top of the first to go up 3-0. They scored another in the second to lead 4-0 after two.
John Jay got the scoring started when
Johan Abad (Corona, NY, Flushing) ripped a double to drive home
Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY, Manhattan Center) and
John Massoni (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Boys). The next batter,
Jason Witten (Staten Island, NY, New Dorp), who was 3-for-4 in the first game, laced a single to score Abad.
In the second inning,
James Podlucky recorded a single to drive in
Luis Guzman (Yonkers, NY, Mt. St. Michael's)who led off with a walk.
The Bloodhounds added an insurance run in the seventh, but the run support proved plenty for Colletta who registered his first shutout since his 8-0 win over Baruch on Apr. 28, 2006.
In the second game, once again the Bloodhounds scored early and often to secure a big lead. They scored three in the first, five in the second and three in the third to take an 11-0 lead after two and a half innings.
The host Beavers scored their first two runs of the afternoon via a pair of unearned scores. But like Colletta in the first game, second game starter, Massoni was dominating as well. He allowed three runs (all unearned) on three hits and struck out seven in the win.
At the plate, Massoni was equally impressive. He was 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBI. Abad was just as impressive as he was 3-for-3 with a run and three RBI,while Podlucky went 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.
Steven Kendrick (Bronx, NY, Sacred Heart)was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs, while
Benjamin Beiro (Bronx, NY, Wesley Chapel) was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
John Jay returns to action on Sunday for a single game against CCNY in a non conference game at Legion Field starting at noon.
