Newburgh, N.Y.— The John Jay softball team closed out the 2009 regular season with a pair of losses on the road as the Bloodhounds were defeated by the College of Mount Saint Mary (CMSM) 10-5 and 9-1.

John Jay ends the regular season with a 14-19 overall record and a fourth place finish the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) standings.

On Saturday, the Bloodhounds took advantage of CMSM miscues to take an early lead in game one.

John Jay's 1-2 punch at the top of the order, Nelly Vega (Bronx, NY, In-Tech Academy) and Krystal Class (Brooklyn, NY, New Utrecht) both reached on errors to get the momentum started. The next batter, Danielle Bonici ripped a single to left center to score Vega. Moments later a sacrifice fly by Kim Bifulco (Staten Island, NY, St. John Villa) scored Class from third. John Jay then went up 3-0 on a two out single by Arlene Pena (Bronx, NY, Lehman) to score Bonici.

The host Blue Knights came back with four runs in the bottom of the second inning to go up 4-3. CMSM scored again in the third to go up 5-3 after three full innings.

But John Jay never went away and scored a run in the top of the fourth when Angela Lam (Brooklyn, NY, Newtown) scored on another Blue Knight error (CMSM had four errors in game one). In the top of the fifth, John Jay tied the score on a sacrifice fly by Nina Chao (Woodside, NY, W.C. Bryant) that scored Bonici who led off the inning with a triple en route to going 2-for-3 in the opener.

But CMSM reclaimed the lead and drew clear in the fifth and sixth innings. They scored three in the fifth and two in the sixth to go up 10-5 to take game one.

In the second game, the Blue Knights got four unearned runs in the bottom of the third as John Jay made three of its four errors in the third inning to help CMSM take a 4-0 lead.

An RBI triple by Marlenne Nunez (Bronx, NY, Bronx Leadership Academy) scored Pena in the top of the fourth for John Jay, but it was not enough.

CMSM scored three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to go up 9-1 and win via the five inning eight run mercy rule.

The Bloodhounds got five hits in the second game as Bonici and Pena both went 2-for-2.

John Jay returns to action on Wed. Apr. 29 for a home CUNYAC play in game against a team pending at a time to be announced.
