Baseball Loses at Centenary College

Augusta, N.J.— The John Jay baseball team was defeated on the road at Centenary College 11-3 on Tuesday afternoon at Skylands Park.

John Jay, now 11-24 this season, had a three hit afternoon from Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY, Murry Bergtraum) who was 3-for-5 with a double and two runs, while Johan Abad (Corona, NY, Flushing) was 2-for-4 in the contest.

The host Cyclones scored four runs in the bottom of the second to lead 4-0 and Centenary led from start to finish.

The Bloodhounds pulled to within 4-1 in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Luis Guzman (Yonkers, NY, Mt. St. Michael's) that scoted Abad who led off the inning with a double.

But Centenary scored three more times in the bottom half of the frame to go up 7-1 after four. The Bloodhounds got another run back in the fifth on an RBI single by John Massoni (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Boys) scored Hernandez who singled to right to lead off the inning.

The Cyclones then scored four more times in the bottom of the sixth to lead 11-2 en route to the win.

The Bloodhounds scored once more in the seventh on a fielder's choice grounder that scored Hernandez who got another lead off hit, this one a double. But John Jay got no closer as Centenary pounded out 16 hits and held John Jay scoreless for the final nine outs.

James Podlucky (Staten Island, NY, IMG Academy) suffered the loss after allowing seven runs on 10 hits over four innings before giving way to Justin Powers (Astoria, NY, Long Island City) who allowed four runs on six hits over four innings.

John Jay returns to action on Wed. Apr. 29 for a home contest against Yeshiva University for a doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m.
