Brooklyn, N.Y. – The John Jay softball team defeated Brooklyn College, 13-0 in a play-in game of the 2009 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) softball tournament. The Bloodhounds will now square off against regular season champion Hunter College in the opening round on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Queens College Softball Complex.

In Wednesday's game, John Jay got two runs across in the bottom of the first, followed by six in the second and five in the fourth en route to a 13-0 five inning mercy rule win.
Eight of the nine players in the batting order recorded at least one hit and all nine batters got at least one RBI.
Leadoff batter,
Nelly Vega (Bronx, NY, In-Tech Academy) was 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI in the affair, while number two batter,
Krystal Class (Brooklyn, NY, New Utrecht) was 2-for-3 with three runs and an RBI.
Christina Perez (Brooklyn, NY, James Madison)was 1-for-3 with a run and a bases clearing double with three RBIs.
John Jay got the scoring started when
Nina Chao (Woodside, NY, W.C. Bryant) lifted a fly ball to left with the bases loaded that advanced all three runners, including Vega who scored on the play. Later in the inning,
Marlenne Nunez (Bronx, NY, Bronx Leadership Academy) reached on a fielder's choice to score Class and the Bloodhounds led 2-0.
In the second inning, the Bloodhounds orchestrated a two out rally to post six runs. A bases loaded walk by
Kim Bifulco scored
Angela Lam (Brooklyn, NY, Newtown). Then moments later, Perez's double scored three runs to give John Jay a 6-0 lead. Perez then scored on a single up the middle by Nunez, who later scored when
Marina Gomez (Bronx, NY, DeWitt Clinton) singled her in.
Meanwhile Lam patrolled the circle and earned her third shutout of the season. She allowed three hits and struck out three.
Once again,John Jay, the No. 4 seed, plays at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Queens College Softball Complex against Hunter College.
