Game 2
Brooklyn, N.Y. — The John Jay baseball team once again got a tremendous effort all around by
Johan Abad (Corona, NY, Flushing) who was a combined 6-for-7 at the plate with four runs and six RBI en route to upping his current hitting streak to 15 games, while on the mound he struck out seven over 2.2 in game two of the doubleheader to earn his first career save as the John Jay baseball team swept Polytechnic University 12-2 and 13-10 at American Legion Field on Thursday.
In the first game, John Jay pounded out 17 hits and was led by Abad who was 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBI. Fellow teammates
Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY, Murry Bergtraum)and
Luis Guzman (Yonkers, NY, Mt. St. Michael's)laced three hits as well. Hernandez was 3-for-5 with a run and two RBI, while Guzman was 3-for-3 with a run.
The visiting Blue Jays did get on the board first with a run in the first inning. But the lead proved to be short lived as John Jay fired back with six in the bottom of the first to take command of the game. The Bloodhounds scored at least one run in each inning except for the third in the win.
Meanwhile on the mound, senior pitcher
John Massoni (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Boys)was impressive once again. The senior south paw went the distance and allowed two runs on four hits. He struck out 13 batters, including 11 in a row at one stretch (from the final out of the second inning through the first out of the sixth inning) en route to becoming the first John Jay pitcher in recent memory (and perhaps the first ever) to record 100 strikeouts in a season.
In the second game, both teams scored at least one run in each inning through the first five until the game was called after the sixth because of darkness.
Polytechnic University took the lead in the top of the first with two runs before John Jay countered with four in the bottom half to take the lead. But the visiting Blue Jays reclaimed the lead with three in the top of the second before John Jay platted five runs to take a 9-5 lead after the second inning.
The Bloodhounds exploded for 17 hits over five innings in the high scoring affair. Abad capped of a great doubleheader with a 3-for-4 two run, three RBI performance to complete the day by going 6-for-7 with four runs and six RBI en route to upping his current hitting streak to 15 games.
Meanwhile Hernandez went 3-for-4 in the second game with two runs and an RBI. Fellow teammates
Benjamin Beiro (Bronx, NY, Wesley Chapel),
Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY, Manhattan Center),
Jason Witten (Staten Island, NY, New Dorp) and Massoni had two hits each in the win.
Justin Powers picked up the win in relief for John Jay.
