Game 2
Bronx, N.Y.— It was a picture perfect day in New York City on Sunday, but on the baseball field the John Jay baseball team, behind senior pitchers
Michael Colletta (Staten Island, NY, New Dorp)and
John Massoni (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Boys), struck Lightning over Lehman College, as the Bloodhounds swept a conference doubleheader from Lehman 5-2 and 11-3 at Lehman's South Field on Sunday.
With the win the Bloodhounds improve to 6-17 overall and 4-2 in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play.
In the first game, Colletta went the distance, allowing two runs on seven hits and struck out seven batters.
The Bloodhounds raced to a 4-0 lead early in the contest. They scored a run in the first and another in the second to go up 2-0. In the second inning,
Johan Abad put a shot onto Jerome Avenue for his first homerun of the year.
John Jay scored two more in the fourth inning, a pair of unearned runs as the Bloodhounds capitalized on Lehman miscues.
After Lehman got on the board with a run in the bottom of the fourth, John Jay returned the favor and with one swing of the bat from
Jason Witten (Staten Island, NY, New Dorp) the Bloodhounds were back up by four. It was the first NCAA homerun for the left handed slugger, who went 3-for-4 with two runs in game one.
Lehman got a run across in the bottom of the seventh, but not enough as the Bloodhounds improved to 3-2 in conference play for the moment.
In the second game, the Bloodhounds dominated from start to finish. Massoni blew away 14 batters in the night cap, frustrating the Lightning starting lineup. The senior south paw fanned eight of the nine batters in the Lehman starting lineup at least once, including six of them twice.
Meanwhile the John Jay bats provided plenty of run support for Massoni.
James Podlucky (Staten Island, NY, IMG Academy), who was 4-for-5 with two doubles, two runs and two RBI scored the first run of the game when he cross home plate on an infield single by
Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY, Manhattan Center)in the first inning.
Lehamn took a tenuous lead in the bottom of the first with two runs. But John Jay tallied up five runs in the top of the second to take the lead for good and they led 6-2 after one and a half innings.
The Lightning cut into the lead with a run in the bottom of the second, but John Jay quickly regained a four run advantage with another run in the top of the third on an RBI single by
Benjamin Beiro (Bronx, NY, Wesley Chapel), who was 2-for-3, to score Abad, who went 2-for-3 in the nightcap.
The score remained 7-3 until the seventh when John Jay tacked on four more runs to lead by twice as many runs as the previous inning.
Meanwhile Massoni at one point struck out 10 of Lehman's first 11 outs through the first three and two thirds innings en route to picking up the win.
John Jay picked up 16 hits in the second game and eight of the nine players in the Bloodhound starting lineup had at least one hit, with five players having two, not including the four by Podlucky.
John Jay returns to action on Tue. Apr. 7 for a home contest against the College of Mount Saint Vincent at 3:30 p.m.
