Softball Rolls Past Brooklyn in a Pair of Conference Games

Brooklyn, N.Y. – With sheer domination the John Jay softball team earned a pair of mercy rule wins on Thursday as veteran Danielle Bonici (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Girls) and freshman Nelly Vega (Bronx, NY, In-Tech Academy) went a combined 13-for-14 at the plate and both belted a homerun each to help the Bloodhounds cruise to victory over Brooklyn College at Floyd Bennett Field. The Bloodhounds won the first game 15-4 before winning the nightcap 19-0.

Bonici was 8-for-8 in the doubleheader. The perennial CUNYAC first team All-Star was 3-for-3 with two doubles, a homerun, four runs and four RBI in the opener, before capping off a big afternoon by going 5-for-5 with a run and five RBI in game two. Vega was 3-for-3 with a double, a homerun, four runs and an RBI in the first game, before wrapping up the day with a 2-for-3, three runs, three RBI performance in game two.

The Bloodhounds scored multiple runs in each inning en route to the shortened win. Two other players, Christina Perez (Brooklyn, NY, James Madison) and Arlene Pena (Bronx, NY, Lehman) had multiple hits in the first game as John Jay registered 13 hits in the game.

The Bloodhounds took the lead in the bottom of the first when Bonici put one over the right center field wall to score Vega, who led off the bottom of the first with a double, and the Bloodhounds were up 2-0.

John Jay never trailed from there. They proceeded to score another run in the first to take a 3-0 lead. The Bloodhounds then scored six more in the second to take a 9-0 lead after two.

Brooklyn College scored four in the top of the third to narrow the deficit a little, but John Jay countered with two more in the bottom half and four in the fourth to go up by 11 en route to the 15-4 win.

Angela Lam (Brooklyn, NY, Newtown)went 3.1 innings and earned the win. She allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits and struck out three.

In the second game, John Jay exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the first to ensure themselves a comfortable lead.

After putting up nine in the first, they got another run in the second, seven in the third and two in the fourth en route to the 19-0 mercy rule win.

The Bloodhounds pounded out 16 hits and batted around the order twice (first and third innings). Krystal Class (Brooklyn, NY, New Utrecht) went 2-for-4 with a run and four RBI, while Sarah Balgobin (South Ozone Park, NY, John Adams) was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI.

Nina Chao (Woodside, NY, W.C. Bryant) earned her first win of the season after going three innings and allowing no runs on five hits and two strikeouts.

John Jay returns to action on Fri. Apr. 10 for a doubleheader at the College of Staten island at 10 a.m. John Jay will serve as the home team for these games.
