Flushing, N.Y. – Continuing Friday's halted game against Baruch, the John Jay softball team's season came to an end as the Bloodhounds were defeated by the Bearcats, losing 4-3 at the Queens College Softball Complex in the first elimination game.
With the loss, John Jay's season ends at 13-21.
Before the game was halted on Friday, the Bloodhounds and Bearcats were knotted at 1-1 with John Jay batting with two outs in the top of the fourth with Nina Chao (Woodside, NY, W.C. Bryant) on third base and Marlenne Nunez (Bronx, NY, Bronx Leadership Academy) at the plate.
The Bloodhounds were down 1-0 in the third when they knotted the score at 1-1. Krystal Class (Brooklyn, NY, New Utrecht) ripped an RBI single to score Angela Lam (Brooklyn, NY, Newtown) from third to even the score. After Baruch went quietly in the bottom of the third, John Jay led off with Chao drawing a walk. Then Christina Perez (Brooklyn, NY, James Madison)sacrificed her to second on a bunt. The next batter, Kim Bifulco (Staten Island, NY, St. John Villa), grounded out to second to advance Chao to third before the thunder and lightning made its appearance ending the day.
Moving ahead to today, the Bearcats got the final out to end the inning.
The score was still 1-1 when John Jay came to bat in the top of the fifth. And the Bloodhounds platted a pair of runs to take a 3-1 advantage. With two outs, Danielle Bonici (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Girls)ripped a double to right field to score Lam, who led off the frame with a base on balls. Then Chao followed suit with a double of her own to score Bonici.
Baruch edged closer with a run in the bottom of the sixth to pull to within 3-2.
The Bearcats then took the lead in the bottom of the sixth with two runs to take a 4-3 lead.
John Jay did not go down without a fight in the seventh. With one out, John Jay loaded the bases. Nelly Vega (Bronx, NY, In-Tech Academy) ripped a single. Then Krystal Class (Brooklyn, NY, New Utrecht) hit a hard grounder to second in what was set up to be a tailor made double play. But the Baruch shortstop, anxious to throw to first, took her foot off the base too early as Vega got to second safely as the speedy Class made it safely to first. Bonici drew a walk to load the bases with one out, but John Jay could not cash in the tying run as the Bearcats escaped narrowly.
John Jay had five hits in the contest, and was led by Vega who was 2-for-4.
Lam suffered the loss after going 6.0 innings and allowed four runs on six hits and two strikeouts.
