Brooklyn, N.Y.— The John Jay College of Criminal Justice baseball team was defeated in the opening round of the 2009 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) baseball championship, losing to the College of Staten Island (CSI) 11-4 at KeySpan Park on Thursday evening.
With the loss, the Bloodhounds will play in the first elimination game on Friday at 1 p.m. against Mitchell College, who lost to Baruch College earlier in the day. Baruch will square off against CSI at 4 p.m. in a winner's bracket game.
The Bloodhounds got a four hit performance from Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY, Murry Bergtraum)who was 4-for-5 with a stolen base. Meanwhile fellow teammates, Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY, Manhattan Center), Johan Abad (Corona, NY, Flushing), Benjamin Beiro (Bronx, NY, Wesley Chapel)and Luis Guzman (Yonkers, NY, Mt. St. Michael's) had a hit and RBI each.
After CSI jumped out in front with a run in the first, John Jay took a 2-1 advantage in the bottom half. Abad walked with the bases loaded to score James Podlucky (Staten Island, NY, IMG Academy). Then moments later, Beiro gave John Jay the lead with a single to right to score Perez.
But the lead was short lived as CSI came back with two more runs in the top of the second and two more in the fourth before platting one more in the fifth to go up 6-2. John Jay cut the lead in half with another run in the bottom of the fifth.
But CSI countered two more in the seventh and eighth to go up 11-3 and go on to win.
John Massoni (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Boys) suffered the loss after going 6.0 innings and allowed eight runs on 10 hits. He walked seven and struck out eight.
