Maspeth, N.Y.— The John Jay College men's soccer team opened its 2009 conference schedule with a tie on Wednesday as the Bloodhounds deadlocked the City College of New York (CCNY) 1-1 at the Metropolitan Oval.
With the tie John Jay is now 1-3-1 overall and 0-0-1 in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play, while CCNY is now 1-4-1 and 1-0-1 in CUNYAC.
The visiting Beavers got the scoring started midway through the second half. In what was an evenly matched game throughout, CCNY scored first in the 63rd minute on a point blank shot by
Matan Maidenberg and CCNY led 1-0.
The CCNY lead lasted for just under nine minutes as the Bloodhounds capitalized on a CCNY goalkeeper mistake in the 72nd minute as
Sergey Bomko (Kiev, Ukraine, John Dewey) sent the ball in the direction of the net on the far sideline from more than 20 yards out as the CCNY goalkeeper attempted to come out of the net and clear a loose ball. The CCNY keeper,
Tayfun Kucuk, was well out of position to stop Bomko's shot from succeeding.
The score remained tied the rest of the way through regulation and two 10-minute overtimes as John Jay earned its first tie since they tied 1-1 with Hunter College on Oct. 17, 2007.
The tie also continues a trend for the Bloodhounds as they have now either tied, won by a goal or lost by a goal against a CUNYAC foe in 21 straight games, a streak that dates back to 2006.
Joseph Rahilly (Malverne, NY, Malverne) made eight saves for the Bloodhounds.
John Jay returns to action on Sat. Sept. 19 at Manhattanville College at 4 p.m.
