Maspeth, N.Y.— Despite 12 saves by starting goalkeeper
Joseph Rahilly (Malverne, NY, Malverne), which included several spectacular ones from point blank range as well as a couple of breakaways, the John Jay men's soccer team was defeated by Medgar Evers College, 6-2, in a home City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) contest at the Metropolitan Oval on Wednesday afternoon.
With the loss, the Bloodhounds are now 1-6-1 (0-1-1 CUNYAC), while Medgar Evers improves to 2-6-1 (1-1-0 CUNYAC).
The visiting Cougars outshot the Bloodhounds 29-11 in the contest, including 20-6 in the second half. Despite the six goals by Medgar Evers, Rahilly made several tremendous saves, including a penalty kick, to keep John Jay within striking range.
Medgar Evers scored three goals in the first half, followed by three more in the second half en route to the win.
The Cougars struck in seventh minute on a goal by
Sharad Sullivan to get Medgar Evers on the board. Sullivan scored another goal moments later at the 13:09 mark to put the Cougars up by two before going into halftime up 3-0.
John Jay struck in the 67th minute to play on a goal by
Johan Quinde (Aragua, Venezuela, Samuel Gompers) to narrow the deficit to two goals. But Medgar Evers scored two more goals over the next 13 minutes to take a 5-1 lead.
The Bloodhounds struck in the 83rd minute on a goal by
Steven Castillo (Maspeth, NY, Forest Hills) via a penalty kick, but got no closer before Medgar Evers scored again in the final minute of play to wrap up the scoring.
Ancil Porter-Lee and Sullivan, who scored two goals for Medgar Evers, combined for 17 shots, 13 of which were on net.
John Jay returns to action on Sat. Sept. 26 for a home affair against Brooklyn College at the Metropolitan Oval at 2 p.m.
