New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women's basketball team was defeated at home to Brooklyn College 79-54 in a City University of New York Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday evening.
John Jay now stands at 0-14 (0-5 CUNYAC), while Brooklyn College is 9-5 (5-0 CUNYAC).
The Bloodhounds were paced by
Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY, North Babylon)with a game-high 23 points on 10-for-20 shooting to go along with six rebounds and six steals. Fellow teammate
Jessica Lirio (Bronx, NY, St. Barnabas)added 18 points, seven rebounds and four steals, while
Chantelle Smith (Flushing, NY, Mary Louis Academy) scored seven points and grabbed eight boards.
The visiting Bulldogs broke a 6-6 tie with a 7-0 run to go up 13-6 with 16:24 to go and Brooklyn never trailed after that.
Brooklyn College gradually pulled away in the first half and led by 22 at halftime with a 42-20 lead.
The Bulldogs maintained a 20 plus point lead the remainder of the second half as Brooklyn steadily increased its advantage. They led by as much as 31 and were up 56-25 with 16:18 remaining.
John Jay, trailing 66-38 with 8:14 to go, went on a 7-0 spurt to pull back to within 21 and were down 66-45 with 6:04 remaining.
But Brooklyn kept John Jay at arms length distance the rest of the way en route to the 25-point decision.
Brooklyn was led by
Frances Lyons and
Justine O'Callahan with team co-highs 13 points and nine rebounds.
The Bulldogs held a 36-26 advantage in points in the paint, and 26-1 advantage in points off the bench.
John Jay returns to action on Mon. Jan. 18 at York College at 2 p.m.
