Jamaica, N.Y.— The John Jay women's basketball team was defeated in a conference game on Monday afternoon as the Bloodhounds lost to York College 87-69.
The Bloodhounds were led by
Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY, North Babylon) with 24 points, nine rebounds, six assists and five steals, while
Jessica Lirio (Bronx, NY, St. Barnabas) added 22 points for John Jay.
John Jay connected on its first four field goal attempts in the contest in what was a see-saw battle in the opening stages of the game. There were five ties in the first half of the contest.
But the host Cardinals took the lead for good when they broke a 14-14 tie with 12:45 remaining, and with a 5-0 spurt extended themselves to a 19-14 advantage with 11:54 to go.
York College gradually increased its lead in the latter stages of the first half.
Lirio connected on a jumper to get back to within three, before York went on a 9-1 run to take a double-digit lead with 9:11 remaining as the Cardinals were up 28-17.
York led by as much as 19 in the first half and led by that amount at halftime as they led 46-27 at the break.
York maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the second half. The Cardinals led by as much as 23 in the second stanza and were up 65-42 with 12:39 to go.
But the Bloodhounds cut into the York advantage and got to within 13 points of the York lead after a continuation three point play by
Zadoora Carson (New York, NY, Urban Peace Academy) with 7:23 to go to cap a 7-1 spurt.
But York kept a safe lead from there. The Bloodhounds got to within 12 with just over three minutes to go on a three point field goal by
Claire Prince to make the score 78-66, but York outscored John Jay 9-3 the rest of the way to preserve the win.
York was led by
Kadisha Wickham with 32 points and 11 rebounds. The Cardinals held a 38-17 scoring advantage in points off turnovers.
With her 24 points, Grice upper her career total to 966, needing just 34 for 1,000 in her career.
John Jay returns to action on Wed. Jan. 20 at the College of Staten Island at 5:30 p.m.
