Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY, North Babylon) knocked in a continuation three point play with 14:52 remaining in the first half, for her first three points of the game on Monday at Manhattanville. They were no ordinary points though as the free throw after the foul gave her 1,000 for her career, becoming just fourth player in John Jay women's basketball history to reach the milestone in the Bloodhounds 78-46 loss to the Valiants.
John Jay, now 0-18 this season, was led by Grice with a game-high 27 points as she was responsible for 59 percent of the team's total scoring.
Jessica Lirio (Bronx, NY, St. Barnabas) added seven points and a game-high nine rebounds.
The host Valiants never trailed in the contest and with the score tied at 6-6, used an 8-0 run to take a 14-6 lead with just less than five minutes gone by.
Manhattanville broke the game open with another run moments later. Up 16-11 with 12:46 to play, the Valiants went on a 16-0 run to take a 21-point lead and Manhattanville was up 32-11 with 7:24 to play.
The Valiants took their biggest lead just before halftime as they closed out the opening stanza with a 6-0 run to take a 26-point lead and led 50-24 at the break.
Manhattanville extended the lead to as much as 42 in the second half and were up 70-28 with 12:41 to play.
John Jay cut into the deficit midway through the second half with an 11-2 and the Bloodhounds were down 72-39 with 9:05 to go.
But Manhattanville maintained a 30 plus point lead the remainder of the second half before the final buzzer sounded.
Manhattanville was led by
Jennifer McSharer with 11 points off the bench, while
Courtney Turner had 10 for the Valiants. Manhattanville held a 41-2 advantage in points off the bench and a 30-11 differential in points off turnovers.
John Jay is back in action on Wed. Jan. 27 at Baruch College at 5:30 p.m.
