Washington, D.C.— The John Jay women's basketball team was defeated by Catholic University 76-34 in the opening round of the Catholic University Tournament.
The Bloodhounds were paced by
Jessica Lirio (Bronx, NY, St. Barnabas) and
Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY, North Babylon) with 10 points and six rebounds each, while
Chantelle Smith (Flushing, NY, Mary Louis Academy) added eight rebounds for John Jay.
The host Cardinals scored opened the game on a 7-0 run and led from start to finish.
Catholic University, who outscored John Jay 18-4 in points off turnovers, took a 25-point lead by halftime and were up 41-16 at the break.
The Cardinals gradually increased the lead in the second half and led by as much as 46 points late in the contest. Catholic led 76-30 with 2:48 to go for its largest lead of the contest before the 42-point decision.
John Jay was outscored 44-20 on points in the paint and 33-10 in points off turnovers.
Catholic University was led by
Brianna Peterson was 22 points in the contest.
John Jay will face fellow conference foe York College in a non conference affair in the consolation game on Monday at 2 p.m. York was defeated by Swarthmore College 79-39 in the tournament's other contest.
