Women's Basketball Rallies from Big Deficit but Loses Heartbreaker

New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women's basketball team trailed by as much as 21 early in the contest, and 15 late in the second half, and grabbed a one point lead late in the contest, before losing a heartbreaker, 66-63, to the City College of New York (CCNY), at Nat Holman Gymnasium.

The Bloodhounds fell to 0-11 (0-3 CUNYAC) on the season.

John Jay was paced by Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY, North Babylon) with a double-double which included a game-high 23 points and a team-high 12 rebounds, while Allana Beddoe (Manhattan Center)added 13 points. Jessica Lirio (Bronx, NY, St. Barnabas) chipped in with 12 points and Zadoora Carson (New York, NY, Urban Peace Academy) had 11 for the Bloodhounds.

John Jay trailed 38-17 with 1:06 remaining in the first half, before outscoring the host Beavers 46-28 the rest of the way, including 41-28 in the second half.

After shooting 22.9 percent (8-for-35) in the first half, the Bloodhounds connected on 39 percent (16-for-41) in the second half en route to a ferocious comeback.

After trading baskets to start the second half, the Bloodhounds went on a 6-0 run to take a 42-26 deficit and turn it into a 42-32 deficit.

But CCNY kept the Bloodhounds at arms-length distance for the next several moments and built its lead back up to 15 and the Beavers led 57-42 with 7:20 remaining.

But the Bloodhounds, in just 3:09, went on a 15-0 run and tied the contest at 57-57 with 4:11 to play.

John Jay went 5-for-5 from the floor during that stretch and 3-for-3 from the free throw line. Carson connected on a continuation three point play to cap the run.

But the Bloodhounds missed their next five field goal attempts as CCNY went on a 5-0 run the process to take a 62-57 lead with 1:59 to play.

Once again, the Bloodhounds were resurgent and came again.

Grice connected on back-to-back field goal attempts, then delivered a pair of free throws with 33 seconds remaining to give John Jay a 63-62 lead with the shot clock turned off.

But the Beavers managed to respond and CCNY's Tai-Danae Bradley nailed a jumper with 17 seconds left to give the lead back to the Beavers.

Grice's jumper with nine seconds to go did not connect. Then after an immediate foul by the Bloodhounds, CCNY made two from the line to go up by three before it ended.

CCNY was led by Ashley Straughn with 20 points and 13 rebounds, while Taryn Vanesselstyn had 12 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.

John Jay held a 27-16 advantage in second chance points, while CCNY held a 42-26 advantage on points in the paint.

John Jay returns to action on Fri. Jan. 8 for a home game against Baruch College at 7 p.m.
