Bronx, N.Y.— After earning two points via a line-up violation that voided out Lehman's win , the John Jay women's tennis team took full advantage of the new life and were victorious in the continuation on Thursday as the Bloodhounds defeated Lehman College 5-4 to earn a trip to the semifinal round of the 2010 Hospital for Special Surgery / City University of New York Athletic Conference women's tennis championship at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Friday.

After initially losing 5-1 on Tuesday, the Bloodhounds earned two points, while Lehman lost one as a result of the violation, to make the score 4-3 Lehman with just No. 1 and No. 6 singles remaining.

Ashley Marrero (Bronx, NY, Lehman), who was ahead of Lehman's Ravnit Bhatia 6-3, 4-2 when the match stopped on Tuesday, finished off her opponent 7-6 in the second set to knot the score, leaving Crystal Charles (Elmhurst, NY, August Martin) of John Jay and Alexandria Reel to decide the result as the No. 6 singles battled on.

Charles, who was seldom used as a singles player this season and was 0-5 as a singles player in this her rookie year, earned her first win as an NCAA Division women's tennis player in the process.

Her match was halted on Tuesday with her leading 1-0. She won the first set 6-3 before putting Reel away with another 6-3 victory in the second set to clinch the win for the Bloodhounds as John Jay advances to the semifinals for the first time since the 2007 season.

“I am so excited for the girls. They have worked hard all season and really wanted this win,” said head coach Natalija Subotic. “I am just so proud of the progress they have made and am very excited to be moving on to the semifinals.”

John Jay will now face ten time defending conference champion Hunter College, the tournament's No. 1 seed at 4 p.m. with the winner advancing to the championship on Saturday to play the winner between No. 3 York College and No. 7 Baruch College.
