Jamaica, N.Y.— The John Jay men's soccer team played one-hundred ten tough minutes with York College en route to a scoreless tie. But York College won the battle on penalty kicks after the contest to determine the winner as the Bloodhounds were eliminated in the quarterfinal round of the 2010 Applebee's / City University of New York Athletic Conference men's soccer championship at York College Soccer Field on Wednesday afternoon.

With the tie, John Jay, the tournament's No. 3 seed is now 6-9-3 overall with one game remaining, a regular season contest against Yeshiva University on Nov. 10. As a result of the penalty kick win, York, the No. 3 seed, advances to the semifinal round of the championship on Saturday.

After regulation, John Jay got the early advantage in the penalty kick game. Ray Sanicola (East Meadow, NY, St. Anthony's) dribbled a kick past the York goalkeeper, Pierreson Pierre-Louis, to give John Jay the early advantage. York's first kicker, Khadim Kebe, banged a shot off the post.

But John Jay's next three shooters, Steven Castillo (Maspeth, NY, Forest Hills), Bryan Kassebaum (Valley Stream, NY, Kellenberg Memorial) and Jason Walker (Windsor, CT, Windsor)were all stoned by Pierre Louis, while the Cardinals proceeded to connect on three straight kicks to win the penalty kick battle 3-1.

York outshot John Jay 14-12 in the contest. Edward Gonzalez (Palm Bay, FL, Bayside) drilled six shots for John Jay, while Ganama Issouf (Bronx, NY, Lycee Linda) fired three.

Kemar Brown (Kingston, Jamaica, Martin Van Buren) made six saves for the Bloodhounds, several of which were critical in the waning moments of the contest.

York, who are the defending conference champions, have advanced to the semifinal round for the fifth consecutive year.

John Jay's playoff appearance was the first for the Bloodhounds since the 2007 season.
