Huge First Half Deficit Costs Men’s Soccer in Key Loss to Hunter

Maspeth, N.Y.— The John Jay men's soccer team allowed Hunter three goals in the first half, including an own goal in the final minute, before fighting back for a pair in the second, but too little too late as the Bloodhounds were defeated by the Hawks 3-2 at Metropolitan Oval.

With the loss, John Jay is now 5-6-2 (2-3-2 CUNYAC), while Hunter improves to 6-5-3 (4-1-2 CUNYAC) this season.

Hunter got the scoring started at the 11:34 mark when Saif Zureikat hit the back of the mesh to give the Hawks a 1-0 advantage.

Hunter scored again at the 43:27 mark on a goal Omry Lifshitz to make the score 2-0. Sixty seconds later, Hunter got an own goal which proved to be the game winner just seconds before halftime.

But the Bloodhounds fought to get back into it. Hunter starting goalkeeper Zade Haobsh made five saves and allowed no goals through the first 82:50 before giving way to backup Murtaza Munir. In the final 7:10 of the contest, John Jay capitalized on the reserve goalie.

Anthony Estevez (Bronx, NY, Evander Childs) got John Jay its first goal of the game on a point blank shot just under the crossbar at 83:23. Then in the final minute M. Nasim Allah Morad (Flushing, NY, Flushing International) netted a goal from a corner kick attempt that bananad its way into the net with just seconds remaining before the contest ended.

John Jay outshot Hunter 13-9 overall, while Hunter attempted four corner kicks to John Jay's three.

Steven Merino (Bronx, NY, Salesian) made three saves in net for the Bloodhounds.
