Women's Basketball Loses at Home to Hunter

New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women's basketball led by 10 early in the second half before Hunter College went on a game-changing 23-4 through the first 10 minutes of the second half to take control as the Bloodhounds were defeated by the Hawks 57-44 at the Doghouse.

John Jay was led by Dominique Grice with 16 points and 10 steals, while Jessica Lirio (Bronx, NY, St. Barnabas) added 13 points. Zadoora Carson (New York, NY, Urban Peace Academy) grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.

Hunter was led by Juanita Whyms with a triple-double of 13 points, 25 rebounds and 11 blocks. Shamar Stewartson had a game-high 17 points for the Hawks.

Hunter led through the early stages of the first half, before the Bloodhounds took control of the contest through the final five plus minutes of the opening stanza.

With the score tied 16-16 with just over five minutes to go, John Jay went on an 8-0 run to take a 24-16 lead with 2:57 to go. Overall, the Bloodhounds outscored the Hawks 10-2 to end the half and were up 26-18 at halftime.

John Jay extended the run to 12-2 overall by scoring the first two points of the second half and take a 10-point lead before Hunter's run gave the Hawks a big lead and control of the contest.

The Hawks led by as much as 18 in the second half and were up 55-37 with 4:03 to play before ending the game with a 13-point decision.

After committing 21 turnovers in the first half, Hunter limited themselves to nine in the second half and outscored John Jay 22-12 on points off turnovers, after the Bloodhounds scored 10 point off turnovers in the first half.

Hunter shot 43.6 percent (17-for-39) in the second half after connecting on 25 percent (7-for-28) in the opening stanza.

John Jay wraps up its 2009-10 season on Mon. Feb. 15 for a home contest against Medgar Evers College at 6 p.m.
