Women's Basketball Loses at Lehman

Bronx, N.Y.— The John Jay women's basketball team was defeated by Lehman College 80-56 at the Apex Arena.

The Bloodhounds had two players record double-doubles as Zadoora Carson (New York, NY, Urban Peace Academy) chipped in with 11 points and 15 rebounds, while Chantelle Smith (Flushing, NY, Mary Louis Academy) had 10 points and 14 boards. Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY, North Babylon) added 10 points, while Jessica Lirio (Bronx, NY, St. Barnabas) had a team-high 15 points.

John Jay, though never owned a lead in the first half, kept the game close through the first twenty minutes. Lehman's largest lead in the opening stanza was nine when they led 18-9 with 11:22 remaining.

The Bloodhounds answered the call and hung around. They were within one with 2:25 to go after a pair of free throws by Grice to cap a 5-0 run and John Jay was down 27-26.

Lehman, who led 34-28 at halftime, went on a 14-6 run to take a 48-34 advantage and the Lightning never led by less than double figures the rest of the way.

Lehman proceeded to break the game open further and established a 20-point lead with 12:51 to go on a three point field goal by Leslie Mencia, who led all scorers with 29 points.

Lehman gradually built the lead and led by as much as 34 before claiming the 24 point win.

John Jay returns home on Friday Feb. 5 for a game against conference foe CCNY at 5 p.m.
