West Harrison, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team fell behind by eight runs after three innings and never got over the hump as the Bloodhounds were defeated 14-3 at SUNY Purchase in a game that was called after seven innings due to darkness at Silver Lake Park on Thursday afternoon.
John Jay, who served as the home team, is now 1-8 on the season, while SUNY Purchase improves to 2-2 overall.
The Bloodhounds were limited to four hits in the contest.
Nick Catalano (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Boys) was 2-for-3, while
Benjamin Beiro (Bronx, NY, Wesley Chapel) and
Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY, Murry Bergtraum) had one hit each.
After allowing a run each in innings one and three, plus six in the second frame to fall behind 8-0, John Jay scored a pair in the bottom of the fifth. Catalano singled to left to score
Dennis Lopez (Selden, NY, Newfield) who reached first with a walk. Then moments later, Hernandez scored from third on a ground ball by
Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY, Manhattan Center).
But with darkness looming, Purchase put up another half dozen runs in the top of the seventh to go up 14-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, Beiro drew a bases loaded walk to score Hernandez for John Jay's third run of the contest. But the game could not go on as darkness set upon the day.
SUNY Purchase recorded nine hits and were issued 15 free passes (14 walks and one hit batsman).
The Panthers' leadoff hitter, second baseman
Jared Isaacson was 2-for-4 with three runs and three RBI.
George Kennedy, the first baseman was 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI.
Alex Rodriguez (Bronx, NY, Adlai E. Stevenson) suffered the loss for John Jay after going two innings and allowing seven runs on four hits.
Matt Paz earned the win for the Panthers after pitching 4.1 frames and striking out five.
John Jay returns to action on Fri. Mar. 12 for a home doubleheader against Yeshiva at 9 a.m.
