Farmingdale, N.Y. --- First year head coach Craig Davidson did not have to wait long for a suspenseful victory. It came in his first ever match as head coach when freshman Stephen Walz (Ramsey, NJ, Ramsey) broke a 4-4 tie at No. 4 singles to secure the win for the Bloodhounds as the John Jay men's tennis team defeated Farmingdale State, 5-4 at the Farmingdale State Tennis Complex.

John Jay (1-0, 0-0 CUNYAC) had fell behind 2-1 after doubles play. The team of Josh Pagan (Douglaston, NY, Benjamin Cardozo) and Ben Jorgensen (New York, NY, Wooster) picked up a 9-8 (7-0) win at No. 2.

But the Bloodhounds won three of the first five singles plays as John Jay and the Rams were tied at 4-4. The Bloodhounds earned wins at No's. 1, 2 and 3 singles as Pagan, who was undefeated in singles play last season, remained undefeated in a John Jay uniform, winning 6-3, 7-5 at No. 1. Fellow teammate Dong Shao (Flushing, NY, Patchogue-Medford) was a winner at No. 2 (6-2, 6-2). Jorgensen won at No. 3 (3-6, 6-2, 6-3) to set the stage for a dramatic finish.

Walz had lost the first set 6-7 (4-7 tie breaker) but came back winning handily 6-3, 6-2 to improve to 1-0 on the young season.

John Jay's match on Friday against St. Joseph's-Long Island has been postponed, as well as Saturday's match against Brooklyn. Hence the Bloodhounds will be back in action on Tue. Mar. 30 for a match against Western Connecticut State at 3:30 p.m.
