Game 2

New York, N.Y.— The John Jay softball team is now a flawless four-for-four this season as they improved to 4-0 after defeating SUNY Purchase in a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. The Bloodhounds beat the Panthers 7-6 in game one, before winning game two 11-3 at DeWitt Clinton Field.

In game one, leftfielder Krystal Class (Brooklyn, NY, New Utrecht) went 3-for-4 with a home run, a pair of singles and three RBI, while Danielle Bonici (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Girls) was 2-for-3 with a triple.

The host Bloodhounds scored early and often and took a large lead. Class' home run, a solo shot, got the Bloodhounds on the board in the bottom of the first and the runs kept on coming. Later in the frame, Bonici ripped a triple that scored Christina Perez (Brooklyn, NY, James Madison). Moments later Bonici scored on a wild pitch to put John Jay up by three.

John Jay scored two more in the second and another in the third to lead 6-0 after three innings.

Purchase got on the board in the fourth, but John Jay got the run back in the bottom half of the inning when Nina Chao (Woodside, NY, W.C. Bryant)ripped a two out triple, then scored on an RBI single by Marina Gomez.

But the Panthers made a serious threat in the top of the sixth with a five run inning capped off by a grand slam home run by Meghan Lalonde, and Purchase was within a run.

But John Jay closed out the game in the top of the seventh as relief pitcher Kim Bifulco (Staten Island, NY, St. John Villa) pitched a 1-2-3 seventh en route to her first save of the season and move the Bloodhounds to 3-0 for the moment.

Angela Lam (Brooklyn, NY, Newtown) picked up the win in game one after pitching six innings and allowing six runs (five earned) on four hits and two strikeouts.

In game two, the Bloodhounds made quick work of the Panthers and won via the eight run mercy rule. John Jay had 11 runs on 14 hits. Six Bloodhounds had two hits each, including Nelly Vega (Bronx, NY, In-Tech Academy), Class, Bonici, Bifulco, Chao and Cassandra Velez (Gaithersburg, MD, Gaithersburg).

Class and Bifulco both hit home runs. Bifulco had a game-high four RBI.

Like game one, John Jay scored early and often. The Bloodhounds got four across in the first to take control and added two more in the second to lead 6-0 after two.

The Panthers struck in the fourth with three runs. But John Jay scored three more in the bottom half and two more in the fifth to go up by eight to win.

Bifulco pitched five innings and allowed three runs on four hits and three strikeouts.

John Jay is back in action on Tue. Mar. 30 for a doubleheader against Baruch College at noon at Floyd Bennett Field.
