Baseball Loses a Doubleheader to Baruch

Bronx, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team lost two games on Sunday afternoon as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Baruch College 18-8 and 8-4 at Bronx Community College Baseball Field.

With the losses John Jay is now 3-15 (1-2 CUNYAC).

In game one, Luis Guzman (Yonkers, NY, Mt. St. Michael's) had a solid game going 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI, while Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY, Manhattan Center) had two hits and two runs and Hector Class had a double and three RBI.

The host Bearcats scored three runs in the second and eight in the third to take an 11-0 lead after three innings and Baruch maintained a large lead throughout.

The Bloodhounds got on the board in the top of the fourth with four runs to cut into the lead. Guzman ripped a two-run single to get John Jay its first two runs of the contest. Later in the inning Class' double scored two more run and the Bloodhounds were down 11-4.

But Baruch kept up the pressure and scored three more times in the bottom half and led 15-4.

In the next inning, John Jay got four more runs Perez got the scoring started by scoring from third on a Baruch error. Later a single by Steven Kendrick (Bronx, NY, Sacred Heart) brought home Wilmer Chavez (Corona, NY, Queens Vocational). Another hit by Guzman brought in another run as Beiro scored on the hit. Then Class lifted a sacrifice fly to score Kendrick.

But the Bearcats added three runs in the bottom of the fifth and another in the sixth to take an 18-8 lead and win.

Baruch out hit John Jay 16-8 in game one.

In game two, the Bloodhounds quickly got two runs across in the top of the first to grab a 2-0 lead. An RBI single by Benjamin Beiro (Bronx, NY, Wesley Chapel) scored Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY, Murry Bergtraum). Perez also scored on the play after a Baruch error.

But Baruch countered in the bottom half of the first with five runs and the Bearcats led 5-2 after one inning.

Baruch then scored another run in the second and two in the third to lead 8-2 after three.

A run in the top of the fourth and fifth to edge closer. An RBI ground out by Guzman in the fourth scored Kendrick, and a triple by Perez, who was 4-for-4 in game two, scored Nick Catalano (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Boys) in the fifth to end Sunday's scoring.

Chris Camacho (Maspeth, NY, HS of Applied Communications) suffered the loss after allowing eight runs (two earned) on seven hits over five innings.

John Jay returns to action on Wed. Mar. 31 at Stevens Institute of Technology at 3 p.m.
