Hoboken, N.J.— The John Jay baseball team was defeated by the Stevens Institute of Technology 12-4 at Dobbelaar Field on Wednesday afternoon.
John Jay, now 3-16 overall, was led by
Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY, Murry Bergtraum) who was 3-for-4 and was a triple shy of the cycle, and added two runs and two RBI, while
Steven Kendrick (Bronx, NY, Sacred Heart) was 1-for-3 with a solo homerun.
The host Ducks out-hit John Jay 16-7 in the contest.
Stevens struck first and scored four runs in the bottom of the first to take the initial lead.
But the Bloodhounds chipped away at the lead and edged closer during the next couple of innings. Kendrick blasted his second homerun of the season, a two-out solo shot in the top of the second to get the John Jay on the board.
The Bloodhounds scored again in the third. With two outs and nobody on, John Jay kept the Ducks scrambling when Hernandez ripped a two out double, then moved to third on a base-hit by
Nick Catalano (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Boys) before coming home on a delayed steal.
After the rocky start, John Jay and Stevens stayed on an even keel as the middle innings turned into a pitcher's duel.
Relief hurler
Alex Rodriguez (Bronx, NY, Adlai E. Stevenson) shutdown the Ducks through the second, third and fourth innings, allowing no runs on two hits.
But the Bloodhounds failed to gain any extra momentum in the interim, as Stevens held the 4-2 lead into the sixth. And in the sixth, the Ducks established a larger lead with three runs to take a 7-2 advantage.
In the eighth, John Jay, with just one swing of the bat, doubled its run tally as Hernandez blasted his team-leading third homerun of the season, a two-run shot to left-center that scored
Dennis Lopez (Selden, NY, Newfield), who started the inning with a double down the rightfield line and the Bloodhounds were down 7-4.
John Jay did no further damage, but the Ducks put up five runs in the bottom half to take a 12-4 lead with three outs to go.
The Bloodhounds went quietly in the ninth as the Ducks secured the win.
Stevens was led by
Mark Rasulo who was 3-for-4 with a homerun, a run and two RBI, while
Ken Meerendonk was 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
Matt Rodgers and
Tom Phillips added two hits each for the Ducks.
Taylor Perez (Staten Island, NY, Fossil Ridge)suffered the loss after going one inning and allowing four runs on five hits.
John Jay is back in action on Fri. Apr. 2 at Lehman College at 1 p.m.
