Baseball Team Loses to Capital at Snowbird Classic

Port Charlotte, Fla.— The John Jay baseball team was defeated by Capital University 11-5 on Thursday morning at the Snowbird Classic.

The Bloodhounds pounded out nine hits in the contest and got two hits each from Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY, Murry Bergtraum), Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY, Manhattan Center) and Wilmer Chavez (Corona, NY, Queens Vocational).

John Jay got first run on the Crusaders with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, The Bloodhounds started off with three straight hits and their first run was on a single by Perez. John Jay scored moments later when Nick Catalano (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Boys) scored from third on an RBI groundout by Benjamin Beiro (Bronx, NY, Wesley Chapel).

But Capital came back with three runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the second to go up 6-2 after the second inning.

Capital scored another two in the fourth and was up 8-2.

The Bloodhounds got a run back in the seventh when Steven Kendrick (Bronx, NY, Sacred Heart) scored on a groundball.

Down 11-2 going into the ninth, the Bloodhounds plated two across to pull to within 11-5 before the game ended. Back-to-back singles by Chavez and Luis Guzman (Yonkers, NY, Mt. St. Michael's) drove in the two runs.

Capital also registered nine hits in the contest.

Chris Camacho picked up the loss after going 3.1 innings and allowing eight runs on six hits. Danny LoPresti (Brooklyn, NY, Abraham Lincoln) pitched the final 4.2 innings and allowed three runs on three hits and striking out four.

“We are playing very very well right now, and much better than last season at this time,” said John Jay baseball coach Dan Palumbo. “Every year we take our lumps playing elite competition in Florida, but the guys are holding their own and playing very good baseball.”

John Jay is back in action on Sat. Mar. 6 for a doubleheader against Medaille College starting at 6 p.m.
