Baseball Falls at SUNY Maritime

Throggs Neck, N.Y.— Playing for the first time this season since returning from their season opening trip in Florida, the John Jay baseball team lost a close one on Tuesday as the Bloodhounds fell to SUNY Maritime 11-10 at SUNY Maritime Baseball Field.

John Jay is now 1-7 this season, while SUNY Maritime is now 1-0 after a successful season opener for the Privateers.

SUNY Maritime came across with four runs in the bottom of the first and led 4-0 after one.

But the Bloodhounds cut the lead in half with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY, Murry Bergtraum), who was 1-for-2 with three runs and a pair of RBI scored John Jay's first run when he cross home on an RBI groundout by Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY, Manhattan Center). The next batter, Wilmer Chavez (Corona, NY, Queens Vocational), hit a single that drove in Nick Catalano (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Boys), who reached base on a double and was 3-for-4 in the contest.

The Bloodhounds kept up the pressure and took the lead in the next inning with four more runs. Hernandez recorded a homerun to right field, the first of his NCAA career, scoring Steven Kendrick (Bronx, NY, Sacred Heart) to tie the score. John Jay got two more runs in the frame capitalizing on a SUNY Maritime error and the Bloodhounds led 6-4.

But the lead was short lived as the Privateers recorded five runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 9-6 lead after four innings. SUNY Maritime then scored another run in the fifth to go up 10-6.

The Bloodhounds did not go away and in the next inning tied the score with four more runs.

But a solo homerun by the Privateers in the bottom of the eighth proved to be the game winner as John Jay's first game since returning north was unsuccessful.

John Jay recorded 12 hits in the game. Eight of the nine starters recorded atleast one hit.

Taylor Perez (Staten Island, NY, Fossil Ridge) suffered the loss after allowing 11 runs (nine earned) over seven innings.

John Jay is back in action on Thu. Mar. 11 for a home game against SUNY Purchase at 3:30 p.m.
