Staten Island, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team lost a pair of games on Saturday to the College of Staten Island in conference action. The Bloodhounds were defeated in game one 19-4 before losing the second game 10-3.
With the losses, John Jay now stands at 5-21 (3-5 CUNYAC) on the season.
In the opening game, the host Dolphins scored a run in the bottom of the first and two more in the bottom of the second to take a 3-0 lead before the Bloodhounds got a run across in the top of the third to pull to within 3-1.
Luis Guzman (Yonkers, NY, Mt. St. Michael's) started the inning with an infield single and later scored on a throwing error by CSI.
But in the bottom of the third, the Dolphins scored 10 runs off of starting pitcher
Taylor Perez (Staten Island, NY, Fossil Ridge)who went 6.0 innings and allowed 19 runs (14 earned) on 24 hits. It gave CSI a 13-1 lead after three innings and the hosts never looked back.
John Jay scored its second run of the game in the top of the sixth when
Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY, Manhattan Center), who tripled to start the inning, scored on a wild pitch after
Wilmer Chavez (Corona, NY, Queens Vocational) struck out swinging.
The Bloodhounds then scored two more runs in the top of the seventh, a pair of unearned scores as
Dennis Lopez (Selden, NY, Newfield) and
Keenan Lambert (Brooklyn, NY, Benjamin Banneker) came home on a two-out error by CSI.
John Jay was out-hit by the Dolphins 24-5.
In game two, CSI scored four runs in the bottom of the second and led 4-0. But John Jay answered with three runs in the top of the fourth to pull to within a run.
Steven Kendrick (Bronx, NY, Sacred Heart) laced a double to bring home
Wilmer Chavez for John Jay's first run. Later Kendrick came in to score on an RBI double by Guzman. Later Guzman scored an unearned run after a fielding error by the Dolphins.
But that was the only scoring John Jay would get. CSI tacked on three runs in the bottom half of the inning, then three more in the sixth to go up 10-3 and win.
John Jay had nine hits in the second game including three by Lopez who was 3-for-3 and two by
Nick Catalano (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Boys) who was 2-for-4.
Chris Camacho (Maspeth, NY, HS of Applied Communications) suffered the loss after going six innings and allowing 10 runs (seven earned) on 13 hits and four strikeouts.
John Jay and CSI will play again tomorrow for a single game at American Legion Field at noon.
