Softball Splits a Pair of Conference Games at Lehman

Bronx, N.Y.— The John Jay softball team split a pair of games on Saturday afternoon as the Bloodhounds and Lehman College won one game each in a conference doubleheader at Lehman College's South Field.

With the two game split, John Jay is now 9-7 (7-5 CUNYAC) this season.

Both teams registered 12 hits in the opener. Danielle Bonici (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Girls) was 3-for-4 with an RBI in game one, while Nelly Vega (Bronx, NY, In-Tech Academy), Christina Perez (Brooklyn, NY, James Madison), Marina Gomez (Bronx, NY, DeWitt Clinton) and Jasmine Miranda-Summers (Passaic, NJ, Passaic) had two hits each.

The Bloodhounds took the lead with a run in the top of the first when Vega led off the game with a single and came around to score on an RBI groundout by Perez.

Lehman though came back with four in the first and two in the second to establish a 6-1 lead after two innings.

The Lightning then took an 8-1 lead after four innings after pushing two more across in the bottom of the fourth.

The Bloodhounds got one across in both the fifth and sixth innings to edge closer. In the fifth an RBI double by Gomez scored Nina Chao (Woodside, NY, W.C. Bryant). Then in the sixth, Vega scored her second run of the game on an RBI single by Bonici.

Lehman though kept put the game away in the bottom of the sixth with a three run inning and go up by eight and win via the eight run mercy rule.

Angela Lam (Brooklyn, NY, Newtown) suffered the loss after going two innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits.

In the second game, Lehman took an initial lead and led 2-0 after scoring a pair in the bottom of the second.

But John Jay scored six in the third to seize the lead and win via the mercy rule. The Bloodhounds powered their way in game two with three runs in the top of the sixth to go up by eight and win.

The Bloodhounds had 10 hits in game two, including two each by Bonici,Perez, Chao and Gomez.

Perez had four RBI in the second game and Bonici added two. Vega scored three runs in the nightcap.

Chao picked up the win pitching after going 6.0 innings and allowing five runs on 13 hits and five strikeouts.

John Jay returns to action on Tue. Apr. 13 for a doubleheader against another conference foe, Hunter College, at 3:30 p.m.
