Brooklyn, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team used a team effort and got splendid pitching performances from Alex Rodriguez (Bronx, NY, Adlai E. Stevenson)and Hector Class (Brooklyn, NY, Liberty (FL)) and in the process averted a sweep as the Bloodhounds defeated the College of Staten Island 5-2 at American Legio Field.

With the win, John Jay is now 6-21 (4-5 CUNYAC), while the College of Staten Island is 17-7 (6-1 CUNYAC) and saw its quest to finish the 2010 conference season undefeated shattered.

The duo combined for 9.0 innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits. Rodriguez went 6.1 innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and picked up his second win of the season. Class went the final 2.2 and did not allow a run or a hit and picked up his first career save.

The Bloodhounds had five runs on 11 hits and got two hits each from Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY, Manhattan Center), Nick Catalano (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Boys), Wilmer Chavez (Corona, NY, Queens Vocational) and Steven Kendrick (Bronx, NY, Sacred Heart). Perez had a triple and scored twice on the afternoon.

John Jay took the lead in the bottom of the first inning with a pair of runs. The first run of the game came when Benjamin Beiro (Bronx, NY, Wesley Chapel) ripped a single to score Catalano. Later in the inning, a single by Jason Witten (Staten Island, NY, New Dorp) scored Chavez.

The visiting Dolphins though tied the score in the top of the second with two runs. After Rodriguez retired the first two batters in the inning, CSI mounted a two-out rally to tie. Both runs scored on a single to rightfield, but an error in the outfield allowed Matt Oetting to score easially and Tom DeWaters to score all the way from first.

John Jay answered with two runs in the bottom of the second. Perez's two-out triple to right-center scored Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY, Murry Bergtraum) to put John Jay up 3-2. Then Perez scored when the next batter, Chavez, singled up the middle.

Then both teams settled in and little scoring took place from there.

The Bloodhounds tacked on one more insurance run in the bottom of the seventh, when Perez scored for the second time, off an RBI single by Kendrick.

John Jay is back in action on Tue. Apr. 13 for a home game against Ramapo College at 3:30 p.m.
