Jersey City, N.J.— The John Jay baseball team had a 5-0 lead against New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) representative New Jersey City University after two innings, and stayed with the Gothic Knights to the end, but the Bloodhounds lost a heartbreaker in the end and were defeated 7-6 at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex on Sunday.

With the loss, John Jay is now 6-24 overall.

The Bloodhounds scored a run in the first and four in the second to take a five-run lead and control of the contest. Wilmer Chavez (Corona, NY, Queens Vocational) ripped a double to right-center to drive home Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY, Murry Bergtraum) who walked to start the game.

But the Bloodhounds then added four more in the top of the second all with two outs and no runners on.

The two-out rally started when Dennis Lopez (Selden, NY, Newfield) drew a walk, and after stealing second, came in to score on a Hernandez single. Then Hernandez did the same as he stole second, then scored on a base hit by Nick Catalano (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Boys). Then Chavez picked up his second and third RBI of the game with another double to score Catalano and Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY, Manhattan Center) who reached first after being hit by the pitch.

Meanwhile, starting pitcher Chris Camacho (Maspeth, NY, HS of Applied Communications)was coasting along. He pitched four innings and allowed one run on five hits and struck out three.

The host Gothic Knight scored a run in the fourth inning to pull to within four runs and John Jay led 5-1.

The Bloodhounds took the 5-1 advantage into the seventh inning, but NJCU scored five in the inning to take the lead.

John Jay battled back in the top of the eighth as Perez scored for the second time in the game after Benjamin Beiro (Bronx, NY, Wesley Chapel) reached on an NJCU error and the game was tied after eight innings.

But the Gothic Knights retook the lead in the bottom of the eighth with a run to go up 7-6.

The Bloodhounds got a two-out walk from Hernandez, but could not punch a run across as NJCU holds on for the win.

John Jay had six runs on five hits in the contest and was led by Chavez's two hits.

John Jay returns to action on Wed. Apr. 21 for a home doubleheader against Yeshiva at 3:30 p.m.
