Bronx, N.Y.— All nine players in the John Jay starting lineup registered at least one hit and the Bloodhounds capitalized on seven Lehman errors as the John Jay baseball team defeated Lehman College 12-6 at South Field on Friday afternoon.
Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY, Murry Bergtraum) was 3-for-3 with four runs and two RBI, while
Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY, Manhattan Center),
Wilmer Chavez (Corona, NY, Queens Vocational),
Luis Guzman (Yonkers, NY, Mt. St. Michael's) and
Dennis Lopez (Selden, NY, Newfield) had two hits each. Perez also had three RBI.
John Jay led from start to finish. The Bloodhounds took the lead in the top of the first after Hernandez, who led off the game with a double, scored from third on a fielder's choice grounder by Chavez.
The Bloodhounds struck again in the third as Hernandez scored for the second time in the game when he raced home from third on an RBI single off the bat of Perez.
In the meantime, starting pitcher
Chris Camacho (Maspeth, NY, HS of Applied Communications) rolled along through the first four innings, holding the Lightning to no runs on four hits.
John Jay tacked on another run in the top of the fifth when Hernandez scored again on another batted ball, this time an RBI single, by Chavez.
But the Lightning struck in the bottom of the fifth and got two runs across to pull to within a run.
A five-run sixth distanced the Bloodhounds from the Lightning as John Jay went up 8-2. A double by Perez scored two runs, and later in the frame,
Benjamin Beiro (Bronx, NY, Wesley Chapel) singled home a pair to put John Jay up a half-dozen.
A pair of runs in the seven and another two in the ninth pushed the Bloodhounds further ahead before securing the win and improving to 2-2 in conference play.
Both teams had 15 hits. Lehman was led by
Matthew Arvelo who was 4-for-5.
Camacho went the distance allowing six runs and struck out three.
Both teams return to action on Saturday for a doubleheader at Legion Field starting at noon.
