Game 1
Game 2
Staten Island, N.Y.— The John Jay softball team split a doubleheader with the College of Staten Island on Friday afternoon as the Bloodhounds lost game one 10-2 before beating the Dolphins in the nightcap 5-4.
The split moves John Jay to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in City University of New York Athletic Conference play.
In game one, the Dolphins jumped right out on the Bloodhounds scoring four runs in the first, two in the second and another in the third to lead 7-0.
John Jay got its first run across in the fourth on an RBI triple by
Nina Chao (Woodside, NY, W.C. Bryant) that scored
Briggitte Martinez (New York, NY, Health Professions), who pinch ran for
Kim Bifulco (Staten Island, NY, St. John Villa) who started the rally with a two-out single.
CSI punched across two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up 9-1. But John Jay came back with another run in the top of the fifth in an infield single by
Angela Lam (Brooklyn, NY, Newtown) that scored
Michelle DeJesus (East Elmhurst, NY, Long Island City).
But CSI got another run across in the bottom of the sixth with two outs to go back up by eight and win via the mercy rule.
In the second game, the Bloodhounds jumped over the Dolphins and led 5-0 after two innings.
An RBI single by
Danielle Bonici (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Girls) brought home
Nelly Vega (Bronx, NY, In-Tech Academy), who drew a walk to start the game. Moments later
Krystal Class (Brooklyn, NY, New Utrecht) came in to score on a double by
Nina Chao (Woodside, NY, W.C. Bryant).
John Jay kept the intensity going in the second inning with three more runs. An RBI single by Vega brought home
Sarah Balgobin (South Ozone Park, NY, John Adams), who walked to start the inning. Later, Lam scored on a wild pitch to up the Bloodhound lead to 4-0. Then
Christina Perez (Brooklyn, NY, James Madison) ripped an RBI single to bring in Vega and the Bloodhounds were up five.
But that was all the scoring John Jay would get and it proved to be just enough for the win. The Dolphins got three runs in the bottom of the fifth and another in the sixth to pull to within a run.
But the Dolphins went quietly in the seventh, just a two-out single before starting pitcher Bifulco got the last batter to ground out to win it for the Bloodhounds.
Bifulco went the distance allowing four runs on nine hits and three strikeouts.
John Jay returns to action on Mon. Apr. 5 against Baruch College.
