Brooklyn, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team picked up a pair of wins on Wednesday afternoon as the Bloodhounds swept a doubleheader from Yeshiva College, winning the first game 4-3 and the second game 14-4.
With the wins, John Jay is now 8-24 overall, while Yeshiva is 0-22.
After a scoreless first two innings, the visiting Macabees got on the board with an unearned run in the top of the third inning. The Bloodhounds, who committed four errors in the contest, made two on one play that allowed
Jamie Engelhardt to score from first on an infield hit.
But John Jay quickly capitalized and scored all four of their runs in the bottom half of the third.
Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY, Manhattan Center) ripped a single to rightfield to score
Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY, Murry Bergtraum) who started the rally with a one-out hit. Then
Nick Catalano (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Boys) scored from third on a Yeshiva error that gave the Bloodhounds the lead.
Moments later Perez scored on an RBI groundout by
Wilmer Chavez (Corona, NY, Queens Vocational). Then with the bases empty, Beiro singled up the middle, stole second and scored on another Macabee error. Yeshiva also made four errors in game one.
Yeshiva fought back with two more unearned runs in the top of the sixth to make the score 4-3.
The Macabees nearly put themselves in position for their first win of the season when their first batter in the top of the seventh led off by getting hit by the pitch. But any threat of a rally was taken away when the runner was caught stealing second. Then next two batters were retired quietly by relief pitcher
Steven Kendrick (Bronx, NY, Sacred Heart)who pitched the final two innings to pick up the save.
Meanwhile
Taylor Perez (Staten Island, NY, Fossil Ridge) picked up his first win of the season after going 5.0 innings and allowing one run (unearned) on four hits with three strikeouts.
In the second game, John Jay took the initial lead with two runs in the bottom of the first. Hernandez, who was 3-for-3 with two doubles, a triple, three runs and four RBI, led off the inning with a double, and scored on a base-hit by
Xavier Perez who was 2-for-2 with a triple, three runs and an RBI.
Later in the inning,
Wilmer Chavez (Corona, NY, Queens Vocational), who was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI singled, and with the hit-and-run on allowed Perez to move to third and score easily after an error by the Yeshiva centerfielder.
The Macabees came back with a run in the top of the second to cut the deficit in half. But in the third, Yeshiva got three runs across with one swing of the bat from catcher
Jeremy Schwartz who blasted a shot over the centerfield fence to put them up 4-2.
But John Jay ended any chance of a Yeshiva upset with 11 runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead and break the game open. The Bloodhounds sent 15 batters to the plate that inning, and the inning was capped by a bases clearing triple by Hernandez. Perez's triple also came in that inning, and
Luis Guzman (Yonkers, NY, Mt. St. Michael's) drove in a pair with a double.
Chris Camacho (Maspeth, NY, HS of Applied Communications) picked up the win after tossing 2.2 innings of relief and struck out three batters.
The game was called after four and a half innings due to rain and darkness.
