Softball Sweeps St. Joseph's-Long Island

Bellport, N.Y.— The John Jay softball team defeated St. Joseph's-Long Island in two games on Wednesday afternoon sweeping the Golden Eagles 17-9 in six innings in game one, and 6-3 in game two. With the wins, the Bloodhounds improved to 11-13 overall this season.

In game one, the host Golden Eagles scored five runs in the first to go ahead 5-0. But John Jay edged closer in the top of the second with two runs.

St. Joseph's-Long Island scored one more time in the bottom of the fourth to lead 6-2, before the Bloodhounds had a dominating top of the fifth with 10 runs to take a 12-6 lead. The lead increased in the top of the sixth with five more, and John Jay was up 17-6. The Golden Eagles scored three more times in the bottom half, but not enough to move to within eight as John Jay earned the mercy rule win.

The Bloodhounds pounded out 15 hits and each hitter in the starting lineup had at least one. Four members had two hits, and John Jay was led Nina Chao (Woodside, NY, W.C. Bryant) who had three.

Nelly Vega (Bronx, NY, In-Tech Academy) was 2-for-4 with a run and four RBI, while Sarah Balgobin (South Ozone Park, NY, John Adams), Marina Gomez (Bronx, NY, DeWitt Clinton), Krystal Class (Brooklyn, NY, New Utrecht) and Chao had two RBI each. Balgobin, Chao and Kim Bifulco (Staten Island, NY, St. John Villa)scored three times in the opener.

In the second game, John Jay scored four in the top of the first inning and led from start to finish.

The Golden Eagles' only three runs came in the bottom of the first, but starting pitcher of game two Bifulco held St. Joseph's-Long Island without a run the rest of the way en route to the win.

The Bloodhounds scored another in the second and another in the third to lead 6-3 and win the game.

Vega, Class, Chao, Jasmine Miranda-Summers (Passaic, NJ, Passaic) and Christina Perez (Brooklyn, NY, James Madison) had two hits each. Chao also scored twice in game two.

John Jay returns to action on Thu. Apr. 22 at the College of Mt. St. Mary at 3:30 p.m.
