Game 2

Newburgh, N.Y.— The John Jay softball team was swept in a doubleheader against the College of Mount Saint Mary (CMSM) losing the first game 10-6 before falling in game two 10-1 in five innings via the mercy rule. John Jay is now 11-15 on the season.

In the first game, the Bloodhounds had seven hits and got two from Krystal Class (Brooklyn, NY, New Utrecht) who was 2-for-3 with a triple and a pair of runs. Meanwhile, Nina Chao (Woodside, NY, W.C. Bryant) was 1-for-2 with a triple and three RBI. Nelly Vega (Bronx, NY, In-Tech Academy) scored twice, while Jasmine Miranda-Summers (Passaic, NJ, Passaic) had two RBI.

The host Blue Knights, who batted in the top half of each inning, took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. But the Bloodhounds quickly countered with a pair in the bottom half. Miranda-Summers recorded a single to score Vega and Marina Gomez (Bronx, NY, DeWitt Clinton)to put John Jay up 2-1.

But CMSM scored two more in the second and another two in the third to go up 5-1. John Jay established a three run third to move back to within one. A bases clearing triple by Chao capped the inning as Class and Christina Perez (Brooklyn, NY, James Madison) scored on the hit.

But the Bloodhounds would never get closer. The Blue Knights came back with five unanswered runs over the next two innings and CMSM led 10-4.

A run in the fifth and seventh got John Jay closer, but not enough. The Bloodhounds loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh. Chao earned a two-out pass to force in Vega, but with the tying run at the plate, the Blue Knights got the final out to hold off the Bloodhounds.

In the second game, the Blue Knights got three across in the top of the first and led from start to finish. The Bloodhounds lone run came in the bottom of inning one when Vega, who singled up the middle to start the inning, scored on a CMSM error.

But the Blue Knights added two in the second, four in the fourth and one in the fifth to lead by nine and win the contest.

John Jay had five hits in the nightcap and were led by Vega and Perez with two hits each.

John Jay returns to action on Fri. Apr. 23 at SUNY Old Westbury at 4 p.m.
