Baseball Loses at Centenary in Final Tune-up Before CUNYAC Playoffs

Flemington, N.J.— The John Jay baseball team, playing in its final game before the start of the 2010 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) championship tournament was defeated on Wednesday afternoon, losing at Centenary College 16-8 at Diamond Nation.

With the loss, the Bloodhounds are now 10-27 overall as they now go headlong into the tournament this Thursday with an opening round game against the City College of New York (CCNY) on Thursday at 4 p.m. at MCU Park on Coney Island.

Against Centenary, the host Cyclones scored six runs in the bottom of the first to go up by a half dozen. Centenary then scored another in the second and two more in the third to lead 9-0 after three innings.

John Jay scored four runs in the top of the fifth and another four in the sixth, but not enough as the Cyclones exploded for 16 runs on 16 hits in the game to preserve the lead.

The Bloodhounds had 14 hits and were led by Luis Guzman (Yonkers, NY, Mt. St. Michael's) and Nick Catalano (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Boys) with three hits each. Both drove in a pair of runs. Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY, Murry Bergtraum) had two hits in the contest.

John Jay used seven pitchers over eight innings in the tune-up contest.

Chris Camacho (Maspeth, NY, HS of Applied Communications) suffered the loss for John Jay after allowing six runs in the first inning.
