Men's Tennis Loses a Close One, 5-4 to Ramapo

Flushing, N.Y.— Playing without their regular top and second seeded players, the John Jay men's tennis team closed out its 2010 regular season with a close loss as the Bloodhounds lost to Ramapo College 5-4 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Tuesday. With the loss, the Bloodhounds ends the regular season at 9-3 and return to action for the quarterfinal round of the CUNYAC men's tennis championship on Saturday at 1 p.m. against York College.

On Tuesday, the Bloodhounds won two of three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead. Rogelio Gutierrez (Brooklyn, NY, Leon M. Goldstein) and Kelvin Rodriguez (Bronx, NY, Bronx Law, Government & Justice) were 8-4 winners at No. 3 doubles, while Tim Smith (Poughkeepsie, NY, Our Lady of Lourdes) and Stephen Walz (Ramsey, NJ, Ramsey) battled to a hard fought 9-8 (10-7) victory.

In singles play, Ben Jorgensen was a 6-4, 6-3 winner at No. 2, while Derrick Chung won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3.

The two teams battled to the final match, but Ramapo pulled out the win at No. 6 singles 6-2, 7-5.

Saturday's match against York will be played at the National Tennis Center.
