Brooklyn, N.Y.— The John Jay softball team was defeated in a pair of games on Tuesday losing to St. Joseph's-Brooklyn in both games of a doubleheader 5-0 and 12-9 at National Softball Grid. With the losses, John Jay is 11-19 overall and return to action for the 2010 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) playoffs starting with a play-in game on May 5 against Brooklyn College.
On Tuesday, the host Bears limited the Bloodhounds to four hits. John Jay had one hit each from
Krystal Class (Brooklyn, NY, New Utrecht),
Marina Gomez (Bronx, NY, DeWitt Clinton),
Nina Chao (Woodside, NY, W.C. Bryant) and
Cassandra Velez (Gaithersburg, MD, Gaithersburg).
St. Joseph's-Brooklyn scored two runs in the first, another in the second and one more in the third to lead 4-0 after three innings. The Bears scored one more in the bottom of the sixth to round out the game one scoring.
Angela Lam (Brooklyn, NY, Newtown) suffered the game one loss after going 6.0 innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits.
In game two, the Bloodhounds had a big lead that got away late. John Jay scored a run in the first to lead 1-0 before the Bears countered with a run of their own to tie the score.
But John Jay had a huge second inning where the Bloodhounds scored six runs and sent 10 batters to the plate. The inning was highlighted by a pair of triple, including one each from Chao and
Christina Perez (Brooklyn, NY, James Madison).
After batting in the top of the fourth inning, John Jay was up 9-3 before St. Joseph's-Brooklyn scored nine unanswered to take the lead and win the game.
The Bears scored three in the bottom of the fourth to pull to within three runs of the lead. But in the sixth, they tacked on six more to rally past John Jay in its regular season finale of 2010.
John Jay had 11 hits in game two, including three from Perez and two from
Nelly Vega (Bronx, NY, In-Tech Academy),
Kim Bifulco (Staten Island, NY, St. John Villa) and Chao.
Time and location for the conference play-in game is to be determined.
