Game 2
Brooklyn, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team scored 12 runs in the last three innings and came from behind twice in the process to beat Lehman College 13-12 to salvage a split of a double header at American Legion Field on Saturday. A throwing error by the Lightning catcher won it for the Bloodhounds in very bizarre fashion. In the first game John Jay lost to Lehman 14-5.
With the split John Jay is now 5-17 (3-3 CUNYAC), while Lehman is 4-9 (1-5 CUNYAC).
In the final inning of the second game with one out and the bases loaded and John Jay trailing by a run (12-11),
Benjamin Beiro (Bronx, NY, Wesley Chapel) hit a comebacker to the mound in what appeared to be a game-ending double play. The Lehman pitcher threw the ball home to get the force at the plate, but the throw by the Lehman catcher to firstbase sailed well beyond the reach of the Lightning first baseman into rightfield allowing Beiro to reach safely and the winning run to score all the way from first to win it for the Bloodhounds.
It was the second time in the last two innings John Jay came from behind. Lehman appeared well in control and was up 8-1 after four and a half innings.
But the large lead evaporated quickly as John Jay put up six runs in the bottom half of the fourth to make the score 8-7. A two-run single by
Luis Guzman (Yonkers, NY, Mt. St. Michael's) capped the big inning as John Jay was back in the contest.
Lehman went back up by two in the top half of the sixth. But John Jay completed the comeback in the bottom of the sixth and move ahead 10-9. Guzman battled back from an 0-2 count to draw a bases loaded walk to force in
Wilmer Chavez (Corona, NY, Queens Vocational) and give John Jay its first lead of the day.
The lead did not last though as the Lightning struck three times in the top of the seventh to go up 12-10.
But for the second Saturday in a row, John Jay did not die. A walk, two hit batsmen and a single got John Jay a run with just one out and the bases loaded. And after a Lehman pitching change, the stage was set for Beiro who was the games final batter.
After the catcher's throw sailed into rightfield,
Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY, Manhattan Center)scored from second and Chavez hustled around from first to score the winning run.
The Bloodhounds busted out 13 hits in the game and was led by Perez who was 3-for-4 with three runs, while Chavez and Guzman had three RBI each.
Earlier in the day, Lehman led 6-5 after three innings before breaking it open with two runs in the fifth and sixth in the sixth to go up big and win the first game.
John Jay was out hit 15-6 and had a three hit performance by Perez who was 3-for-3 with a run and two RBI.
John Jay is back in action on Tue Apr. 6 for a home game against Manhattanville College at 3:30 p.m.
