Brooklyn, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team gave the 2010 regular season conference champions something to worry about on Friday. The Bloodhounds led most of the way but lost their lead late in the contest as John Jay was defeated by the College of Staten Island 8-5 in the winner's bracket game of the Municipal Credit Union / City University of New York Athletic Conference baseball championship at MCU Park.
With the loss, John Jay moves into the elimination bracket and will face Baruch College for a chance at the championship round on Saturday. CSI official moves into the championship round needing just one more win.
John Jay led by as much as three runs and were up 5-2 as CSI came to bat in the seventh. But the Bloodhounds committed several costly errors that altered their chances at keeping the lead.
The top seeded Dolphins got five runs in the bottom of the seventh to turn a 5-2 deficit into 7-5 lead and win the contest.
John Jay pounded out 13 hits and were led by
Wilmer Chavez (Corona, NY, Queens Vocational)who was 3-for-5 with a double, a run and two RBI.
Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY, Manhattan Center) also had three hits and was 3-for-5 with a pair of runs.
Hector Class (Brooklyn, NY, Liberty (FL)) suffered the loss in relief after going 3.1 innings and allowing six runs (three earned) on nine hits.
