Staten Island, N.Y.— The John Jay softball team was swept in a doubleheader on Monday morning as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Baruch College losing the first game 10-2 before falling in the nightcap in heartbreaking fashion 8-7 at the College of Staten Island Softball Complex.

John Jay is now 5-3 (3-3 CUNYAC) on the season.

In the first game, John Jay grabbed the early lead and led 2-0 after getting a pair of runs in the top of the first inning.

Kim Bifulco (Staten Island, NY, St. John Villa) ripped a bases clearing double to drive in Danielle Bonici (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Girls) and Christina Perez (Brooklyn, NY, James Madison).

But the Bearcats came back with four runs in the bottom half to take a 4-2 lead after one inning.

Baruch then scored another in the second, two in the third and three in the fourth to establish an eight run lead and win via the five inning eight-run mercy rule.

John Jay had two runs on four hits in the opener. Bonici, Perez , Bifulco and Cassandra Velez (Gaithersburg, MD, Gaithersburg) had one hit each in the first game.

In the second game, John Jay jumped out on Baruch and scored a run in the first and four in the third to take a 5-0 lead after two and a half innings.

The Bloodhounds got the scoring started when Bifulco, for the second game in a row, nailed a double. This one scored Krystal Class (Brooklyn, NY, New Utrecht) who led off the game with a walk.

John Jay then put up a four spot in the third and appeared well in control. An RBI single by Bonici scored Angela Lam (Brooklyn, NY, Newtown) who doubled to start the inning. Later Bonici scored on an RBI single by Bifulco. Then a bunt single by Nina Chao brought home Perez from third. The Bloodhounds rounded out the fourth inning barrage when Bifulco scored on an RBI groundout by Velez. All in all John Jay had four runs on six hits in the inning.

But Baruch battled back and tied the contest. The Bearcats scored one in the third to pull to within four runs of the lead.

John Jay still held a 5-1 lead until Baruch got four runs across in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score.

The resilient Bloodhounds pulled away again with two runs in the top of the seventh. They capitalized on a Baruch error that allowed Bifulco to score from first on a ball hit by Chao, who went to third on the error by the Bearcats' leftfielder. Then Sarah Balgobin (South Ozone Park, NY, John Adams) singled home Chao to put the Bloodhounds up by two.

But in the bottom half of the frame, Baruch produced three runs to steal the win.

John Jay ripped 12 hits in the second game including two each from Bonici, Perez, Bifulco, Chao and Balgobin. Bifulco led the Bloodhounds with two RBI.
