Brooklyn, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team was defeated by Manhatanville College 7-4 at American Legion Field on Tuesday afternoon.
With the loss, John Jay is now 5-18 overall, while Manhattanville is 8-13 this season.
The Bloodhounds had nine hits on the afternoon, including three by
Nick Catalano (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Boys) who was 3-for-5 with a double, a run and an RBI.
Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY, Murry Bergtraum) was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.
The visiting Valiants took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third before the Bloodhounds tied the contest in the bottom half. John Jay got on the board when Catalano scored from third on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Wilmer Chavez.
Later, John Jay took the lead and went up 3-1 after scoring a pair of runs in the fifth. Hernandez ripped an RBI single to centerfield to score
Dennis Lopez (Selden, NY, Newfield), who led off the inning with a walk, then stole second to move into scoring position. Later in the inning
Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY, Manhattan Center) placed a single to rightfield to score Hernandez from third.
Manhattanville edged closer in the top of the sixth with a solo homerun off the bat of
Dave Reider against relief pitcher
Taylor Perez (Staten Island, NY, Fossil Ridge), who suffered the loss in relief after going four innings and allowing six runs (five earned) on 10 hits. Starting pitcher
Chris Camacho (Maspeth, NY, HS of Applied Communications) went five innings and allowed one run on five hits with three strikeouts.
The Valiants then scored five runs in the final two innings to take the lead and distance themselves. Manhattanville took the lead with one out in the eighth on an RBI single by
Paul Blejec. But a two base error after the hit allowed another runner to score as Blejec ended up on third. He then scored on a groundout to shortstop to give Manhattanville a 5-3 lead.
The visitors scored two more in the ninth and were up 7-3 with three outs to go for John Jay.
The Bloodhounds loaded the bases with one out, before Manhattanville went to the bullpen. John Jay salvaged one run as
Hector Class (Brooklyn, NY, Liberty (FL)) scored on an RBI groundout by Catalano. Then closer
Chad Wallace got the final out as John Jay left the bases loaded.
John Jay left eight runners on base in the game, while Manhattanville stranded 12.
John Jay is back in action on Thu. Apr. 8 for a home contest against the College of Mt. St. Vincent at 3:30 p.m.
